ABOUT THE POPAI AWARDSThe POPAI Marketing at Retail Awards 2013 will recognise excellence in point-of-purchase advertising displays and in-store communication activity produced and placed between 1st Aug 2012 and 31st July 2013.
There are 18 categories in the main competition covering all aspects of the P-O-P market including digital media in retail (DMiR).
The pinnacle of the competition is the presentation of the Display of the Year Award given to both the best temporary entry and the best permanent entry from all categories.
WHAT CAN BE ENTERED?
- Any display with a production run of 50 units or more (lower run for category 12, 13, 14) designed or manufactured by a South African producer for either an international or domestic customer may be entered. Displays designed or manufactured in South Africa for export are also eligible.
- Entries must have been produced and shipped between 1 August 2012 and 31 July 2013. However, yearly programmes such as automotive campaigns scheduled for the 2012/2013 model year are eligible.
WHO CAN ENTER?
- Any designer or producer of P-O-P material, agencies, brand owners, services companies and retailers.
- The Awards are open to both POPAI members and non-members.

JUDGING CRITERIAAll entries are judged against the following criteria:
• Marketing objectives and strategies
• Quality of the case history
• Design
• Construction
• Creativity
• Use of retail space
• Branding
• Communicative value
• Ability to drive sales or meet the objectives set by the client in the brief
• Any other factor the judges determine that make the display stand out against the others in the same category

- A special category to reflect displays whose planned roll-out was a run of less than 50 units
- There must be clear evidence that such entries were not simply a trial or a component part of a larger display project
- Entries into this category can relate to any retail sector
6. Flagship and StoreAll: Permanent & Temporary (14)
- This category reflects integrated displays where an entire flagship, single store or shop-in-shop was created
- There must be clear evidence that such entries were not simply a trial or the initial element of a full store roll-out
- Entries into this category can relate to any retail sector
7. Emerging / Main Market All: Emerging/ Main Market: Permanent & Temporary (15)
8. SustainabilityAll: Permanent & Temporary (16)
- Case studies entered into the Sustainability Award must have been entered into another category
- The POPAI Sustainability Award recognises displays which have been created and executed with the minimum of impact on the environment
- A ‘green’ display isn’t just about the design or use of recycled materials; entries should demonstrate their environmental credentials across the board paying specific attention to the areas below where appropriate
- As part of your entry you will be asked to include the following:
- Practices employed in the design stage of the project that reduced the environmental impact of the display
- Materials used and how the production process helped reduce the environmental impact
- How changes made to the physical infrastructure impacted upon production such as reduced utility consumption, reduced wastage/waste treatment and improved process control
- How the supply chain was included in the process to drive environmental efficiencies
- The role that installation and fulfilment played in reducing the environmental impact and how changes in practices were employed N.B. In preparing case study information for all of these areas judges will be looking for evidence of how new working practices differed from traditional methods
